How to use FileZilla to upload your website files

This article will demonstrate how you can configure FileZilla using Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) to upload files to your PSU webspace.

Requirements

  • A valid ODIN account username and password.
  • FileZilla must be installed on your computer. You may obtain FileZilla for free at http://www.filezilla-project.org.

Steps

  1. Start FileZilla and select Site Manager from the File menu.
  2.

  3. Select New Site on the lower left side of the new menu screen.
  4.

  5. Choose a descriptive name for your new site, such as My PSU Site. Enter odin.pdx.edu in the Host field. For Servertype, select SFTP - SSH FIle Transfer Protocol from the drop down menu. For Logontype, select Normal. Enter your ODIN account username and password in the appropriate fields.
  6.

  7. Click Connect. You should see a pop up asking if you want to trust the host and connect. Check the box for Always trust this host, add this key to the cache and click Ok.
  8.

  9. Once you are connected, you will see a screen that has your local computer files on the left side and the server you are connected to on the right.
  10.

  11. Double-clicking public_html will open the directory where you can begin uploading your files. To upload files, simply select them in the local directory on your computer and either double-click the file or right-click and select Upload.
  12.

  13. The next time you run the program and wish to use this same connection, simply click the button Open the Site Manager and select the connection from the menu that pops up.

Troubleshooting

  • If your page is not displaying properly after following the above steps, try deleting the index.html file from your public_html folder and uploading it again. Clearing your web browser's cache can also help with page display issues.
  • If you are unable to upload any files, your UNIX/Web folder may have reached quota. Your UNIX/Web folder serves as storage for both your website and for any programs you write in ODIN using UNIX. Thus, both will count towards your total quota. Delete unneeded files, or move them to a different location, to make more space for your website.

Additional Information

  • If you need more quota space for University-related business, you may request an increase from the User Support Services Helpdesk. Students initially receive 50 MB of storage space, while Staff and Faculty receive 150 MB.
