The Odin Account Manger (OAM) allows Faculty, Staff, Students, and Affiliates to manage their PSU computer account, otherwise known as an "Odin" account. You can:
• Create/setup your PSU computer account
• Change your password
• Change your secret questions
• Update your directory information (employees only)
If you already have an Odin account you can log into OAM here: https://oam.pdx.edu
If you are a new Faculty, Staff, or Student click here for instructions on setting up your account.
Driven by security auditors, we are required to periodically expire passwords. This means we require a password change every 6 months.
OAM stands for Odin Account Manager. Odin is the historical name for PSU’s computer network accounts. This is a homage to PSU’s mascot, the Vikings.
PSU has implemented an electronic communications policy that will affect official correspondence from administrative units at PSU to students and employees. Direct e-mail (which OAM will enable by requiring e-mail address registration) and the PSU Portal (coming shortly) will be avenues PSU will use to contact you directly - instead of using paper mail. We do not expect to see this registered e-mail address to be used for blanket e-mail notifications except in the case of an emergency.
OAM will remember the past 10 passwords you have used. You will not be able to reuse a password until it has rotated out of the 10 remembered passwords.
You cannot recover your old password but you may certainly reset it to a new one. Enter your username or PSU ID at the OAM login screen and click on “Forgot my Password.” You will be prompted with your authentication questions.
Every 6 months.
Usually, your e-mail address at PSU is of the form OdinID@pdx.edu. OAM allows you to also select an additional, more descriptive, e-mail address for PSU which is comprised of your first and last names. Mail to you at PSU can also be addressed to you at this preferred address.
Changing a password via OAM (or any other external method) sometimes triggers an interaction with network security measures in place for brute-force attacks on user accounts. It seems to only impact a very small subset of users who have open network shares to OIT resources. The lockout is temporary and will be released quickly. If this happens to you after OAMing yourself (or using OAM to change your password), please logout and wait 5 minutes before logging back in. Although this only affects a few users, as a general precaution, we recommend that you save and close any open applications prior to OAMing (or changing your password) and log out afterwards.
If you set up your mail program to remember your password, it will not have the new password you set when you OAMed yourself. Consequently, your mail program will be attempting to connect with your old password and failing. You will need to reset your mail program's saved password to your new password.
Nothing. Except for when you are making changes to your account settings via OAM, your accounts are not dependent on OAM. You should be able to use your various OAM controlled accounts even if OAM is down. The only thing you won't be able to do is change your password, which will require OAM to be up and running.
Banner - The Enterprise Resource Planning system that controls most administrative functions at PSU, including student information, financial transactions, HR and inventory control.
Banweb - See PSU Information System...
E-mail Account - E-mail account offered by PSU to most computer account holders. Mail received at OdinID@pdx.edu although OAM will also allow users to specify a firstname.lastname@pdx.edu e-mail address (which will be the preferred method). Users may chose to use this e-mail account, or register a forwarding e-mail address via OAM.
myPSU - The Portland State University portal.
Odin - The naming of various computers and services at PSU has traditionally followed norse mythology, as a tip of the hat to the PSU Vikings. Odin, a Norse god, was a name originally given to a login server in the eighties. Over time, the increasingly consolidated computer account given to users was called the Odin account.
Odin Account - A combination of Odin ID and password that enables you to use various online resources at PSU.
Odin ID - The login name or user ID that you use to log into various computer services at PSU.
Password Aging - The process of requiring a new password to be set for all computer accounts after a defined period of time. Using OAM will indirectly require password resets after 180 days. This is because your Banweb (PSU Information System) account will expire its password periodically and when it expires, Banweb will direct youto OAM to change it. Changing your password in OAM effectively changes it everywhere, thereby accomplishing the goal of password aging.
PSU Computer Lab Account - A user ID and password that enables you to log into systems in general use computer labs on campus (both PC and Mac). It can also be used to connect to file shares from some servers. This is sometimes called your Active Directory account.
PSU ID Number - A unique number that identifies you at PSU. This is typically a 9-digit number.
PSU Information System - The web-based interface to a small portion of the Banner System which enables students to register for classes, pay their bills, look at transcripts and perform other administrative functions. PSU employees also have access to the PSU Information System for various tasks.
Sponsored Account - A computer account that is not represented by a person listed in Banner. These are often guest users sponsored by a PSU employee or administrative accounts created for departments. Sponsored accounts may have PSU Computer Lab and E-mail/Wireless Networking access. They usually do not have banweb access.
Wireless Networking - Referred to locally as Pubnet, PSU provides wireless network access throughout much of the campus. You will need a valid Odin Account to access this network.
