This article will describe how to append a signature to your outgoing email messages using the Mac Mail email client program. Adding a signature not only makes your messages look more professional, but allows recipients to easily identify who you are, what you do, and the best ways to contact you. The University Communications department has made a standard PSU signature for faculty and staff available on their website, but you may modify it or create your own if the standard signature does not meet your needs.
- You must have Mac Mail installed and properly configured in order to use it to check your PSU mail.
- Open Mac Mail, and click on the 'Mail' menu at the top of the screen. Select 'Preferences.'
- Select the 'Signature' icon on top of the 'Preferences' window. Select your account from the leftmost field, and click the Plus button. Enter a name for your new signature in the center field, and enter your signature text in the rightmost field.

- When you are finished generating your signature, close the 'Preferences' window. When you compose a new message, your signature should automatically be appended to the bottom of your email. A drop-down menu on the window's right should, if the above steps were successful, display the name you gave your signature in Step 2. If you wish to create multiple signatures, you can use this drop-down menu to select between them.

- If you have followed the above steps and your signature does not appear on outgoing messages, try restarting the program and going through the setup process again. If your signature still does not appear, contact the User Support Services Helpdesk for assistance.
- Mac Mail does not, by default, support HTML content (such as images) in signatures. The default signature provided by University Communications contains HTML content; to use this signature format, you will need to remove the HTML code before pasting the signature into the signature field box as described above. If you wish to use the HTML signature, you will need to use a mail client such as Thunderbird.
