Why am I being blocked from accessing the network on campus?

To ensure the integrity of the PSU network and to enforce the Acceptable Use Policy, there are certain issues that can cause a computer to be blocked from having internet access on campus:

1) Virus Jail:  If you have a virus that is causing significant traffic on our network, the system will suspend your connection to the internet to prevent excessive network traffic and the further spread of the virus.  You may get the following graphic when you try to access the internet.

Virus Jail

If you get this message, your internet access will not be restored until:

  • You bring your computer to the Helpdesk to have our technicians scan your machine for viruses. For more information:  USS Helpdesk Virus Scan
  • You take your computer to a commercial computer repair shop and have them run a virus scan.  Bring the receipt to the USS Helpdesk to request reactivation of your internet access.
  • You erase your computer's hard drive and re-install your computer's operating system.  Bring your computer to the USS Helpdesk so we can verify your re-installation.
  • Please note: There are some viruses that infect Macintosh computers, please see the USS Helpdesk for help in removing viruses on those machines.

2)  DMCA Violations (Illegal File Sharing):  If we get a copyright infringement notice from an outside company, we will turn off internet access for the IP address listed in that notice.  For more information about DMCA violations and how to respond, please see File-Sharing and Digital Copyright Enforcement Guidelines.

In either case, you will get an e-mail sent to your PSU email address that has a RT Ticket tracking number; please make sure to reference that number when you contact the USS Helpdesk so we can identify your issue quickly.
