Configure Network control panel.

Open the System Preferences by choosing "System Preferences" under the Apple menu (Figure 1). This will open the System Preferences window.

- Click on the "Network" icon located under the "Internet & Network" section.

Click on the "Show:" drop-down menu and choose the "Active Network Ports" item. This displays a list of all active ports for networking.

- One of the active ports is labeled "Internal Modem." Be sure that it is turned on by putting a check in the box next to it. If you do not see a port labeled "Internal Modem" then you must connect a extenal modem to the modem port. Consult the modem venfore for installation details.
- Click on the "Show:" drop-down menu and choose the "Internal Modem" item. Choose "Modem Port" if you are using an external modem. This displays the options for this port.

Under the "TCP/IP" tab, verify that "Configure:" is set to "Using PPP" (Figure 3). All other settings are left blank.

Under the "PPP" tab, enter the following settings:
- Telephone Number: 503-725-6700 for students. Faculty/staff use 503-327-0200.

Account Name: your Odin username.

Under the "Modem" tab, verify that "Show modem status in menu bar" is checked.

- If you are using an external modem then you must specify the modem model. Refer to the documentation for your modem for more information.
- Click on the "Apply Now" button to save your changes.

Test the dial-up configuration.

Click on the Modem status icon located at the upper right corner of the screen.

- Choose the "Connect" menu item. You should hear the modem attempt to dial and connect to PSU.
- You will be prompted for your password if you did not enter it in the PPP settings. You should hear the modem attempt to dial and connect to PSU. If the connection is successful then modem status icon will turn black and the "Connect: menu item changes to "Disconnect."
- Try browsing the web using your favorite web browser.
- When finished, choose the "Disconnect" menu item under the modem status icon. The icon will turn gray after you have been disconnected.
- Congratulations, you have completed the steps necessary to install and configure dial-up networking for Mac OS X.
