Advertising a Mailman Mailing List

By default, new mailing lists are not advertised to the public. This prevents (or at least slows) unauthorized subscription attempts and postings. However, you might want to advertise your list so anyone can see it and subscribe to it.
Setting whether your list is advertised:

  1. Go to the list administration interface web page for your list, either by clicking on the link found in the "Welcome" message your received when the list was created, or by going to https://www.lists.pdx.edu/lists/admin/LISTNAME/ where LISTNAME is your email list name. For example, for the list example@lists.pdx.edu, you would go to https://www.lists.pdx.edu/lists/admin/example/
  2. Enter the list administrator password (also found in the "Welcome" message you received.)
  3. From the Configuration Categories list at the top, click on Privacy Option. The Subscription rules options will display below.
  4. Set the Advertise this list when people ask what lists are on this machine? option to Yes. (By default, this is set to "No" on new lists.)
  5. Click the Submit Your Changes button.
  6. A link to your mailing list will now appear on PSU's main Mailman site https://www.lists.pdx.edu/ Users will be able to subscribe themselves (depending your list's settings) by clicking on this link and following the instructions.
